FPL understands that keeping energy costs down is important when running a successful business. An energy recovery ventilation system helps cut HVAC energy costs by working with your air-conditioning system to prevent energy waste as fresh air enters your building.
Installing one of these units reduces your air conditioning load by up to 20 percent. And, since ERV systems control indoor humidity levels, your customers and employees will be more comfortable.
FPL's rebate program helps you pay for qualifying ERV units, so you can reduce costs while improving your business financial security.
How it works
An ERV recovers energy from building exhaust air and reuses it to precondition fresh, outside air required for ventilation. In a hot and humid climate like ours, the cooler, drier building exhaust air can be used to pre-treat and pre-cool incoming air so your air conditioner doesn't have to work as hard. In the winter months, exhaust air can be used to pre-heat incoming air, helping you save on your heating costs.
Because the energy transfer is at a molecular level, humidity stays in a vapor state, meaning no liquid condensation is produced.
These graphics demonstrate how an ERV system works in two common solution layouts:
(1) The Stand-Alone ERV System: These systems serve a rooftop air-conditioning unit located nearby and exhaust air from spaces that need to be ventilated anyway - including restrooms, offices, break rooms and the like. The ERV system replaces an existing exhaust fan and enables most or all of exhaust to be used for recovery.
(2) The Bolt-On ERV System: These systems are built into a rooftop air-conditioning unit and enable roughly half to two-thirds of the total ventilated exhaust to be used for recovery. Because the bolt-on ERV system draws exhaust from the return duct only, an exhaust fan is still required for spaces like restrooms, offices, and break rooms.
